Leaking oil from the front diff
New seals, didn't smack it on anything yesterday but did use the locker a few times....what the deal?!

No way you could've gotten a plugged vent? Plugged vent + warmth from locker...

hmmm, maybe, it does seem to be a big mess on that side (vent is picture left). its pooling just to the right of the plug and appears to be seeping out the gasket...ill have to take a closer look. Looks like its finally time to install the breather mod. EDIT: the pool got much bigger overnight though...hmmm some more.

Any chance it was overfilled and then the locker whipped it up? I wonder if it puked out extra.

Its possible, but I'm not sure how the locker would have made it worse, its an e-locker so its just a solinoid actuated engagement fork

Sometimes a gasket just says "no". If the gasket got forced by a clogged breather, it may just be toast.

you might be right. Bummer.

Forgive my ignorance, but does the carrier (and therefore ring gear) not spin unless it's engaged?
If that's the case then it could still be cavitation.
Reason I am pushing that is because you said it had new seals and I am thinking you had to refill the diff when you were done.

The ring gear is always engaged via the open diff, the engagement fork just takes the diff offline and locks the shafts together

yeah I agree with RR, sometimes it doesn't take or the torques are out of spec

Looks like the seal just decided to give out. Did you use OEM stuff when you did the rebuild?

I had it rebuilt by an authorized Toyota service center.

I'd take it back and ask them to fix it.

It's been about a year, but I still think that's the plan. This isn't the first time they've gone back in there either.

My factory seals have lasted 22 years so I feel like their repair job should last over a year. I noticed that I must have bashed the rear pumpkin on my Grand Marquis the other day. Slow gear oil leak from the bottom. I can only guess that it must have happened trying to avoid a speed bump that has the channels cut into it.
